上薗氏によれば、ピクシブが自作サーバーを開発するに至った経緯は代表取締役社長の片桐孝憲氏が「Googleみたいにしよう」との鶴の一声で決まったという。自作したサーバーは当初、ホームセンターで購入したラックに直接置いていたが、パーツが固定されていないため持ち運びが不便で運用しにくいなどの問題があった。

　このため、新型機としてベニヤ板の上にサーバーに必要なパーツを置く「B-28（ベニヤ）機」を導入することで運搬性を改善。1台あたりの組み立て時間は約5分間で、マザーボードの固定にはガムテープを使用しているとした。また、「B-28機」の1台あたりのコストは約5万円で、CPUに「Athlon II X4 605e」、メモリに「DDR2-800 8GB」などを利用している。

　サーバールームはオフィス内に設置。これまではオフィスフロアとサーバールームの区切りがなく、フロア全体が30度以上を超えることもあったが、2009年夏に大型エアコンとパーテーションを区切り、温度対策を図ったという。電気使用量は125Aで、1台あたり平均0.7〜0.8Aになる。電気代に関してはオフィスフロア部分も含まれ、社員数が20人、サーバー台数が120台の2009年8月は31万2226円。サーバー1台あたりの推定電気代は1833円だとした。
